Why photo and video studios carry a different asset profile

A photography or videography studio in Malaysia carries an unusual asset profile for an SME. Cameras, lenses, lights, audio kit, drones, and specialised rigs add up fast. A modest commercial studio can hold half a million ringgit of equipment in a single space, with another set on the road for shoots.

The risk surface is also broader than the equipment itself. Client visits to the studio carry public liability exposure. On-location shoots carry equipment, transit, and third-party risk. Drone operations carry aviation regulation overlap. Editing equipment and stored footage carry cyber and data exposure.

The creative-services side adds professional liability. A wedding video that fails to deliver because of corrupted memory cards. A corporate shoot delivered late because of equipment failure. A photographer accused of using copyrighted music or images. Each one is a service-failure claim, not a property claim, and needs different cover.

The right insurance package treats the studio, the equipment, the people, and the creative output as four distinct risk centres.

How a studio insurance package is built

A photo or video studio policy in Malaysia usually combines five to seven products, with equipment cover and creative liability getting more attention than they would for office-based businesses.

  • Public Liability: Covers client and visitor injury claims in the studio and on-location shoots. Often extended for off-premises operations.
  • Commercial Fire and Equipment (All Risks): Covers studio premises, fit-out, and equipment against fire, theft, accidental damage, and transit. Often structured as a specialist equipment all risks policy rather than a standard fire policy because of the high asset value and mobility.
  • Business Interruption: Pays lost revenue if the studio has to close after an insured event. For studios with deposits already taken on future shoots, this matters.
  • Professional Indemnity (Creative Services): Covers claims for delivery failures, copyright disputes, errors and omissions in deliverables. Increasingly required by corporate clients and agencies.
  • Group Personal Accident: Covers your photographers, videographers, assistants, and editors against accidents on shoots and in the studio.
  • Cyber Insurance: Covers loss of stored footage, ransomware on editing systems, and client data exposure.
  • Drone or Aviation Liability: If you operate drones, this is a specialist add-on. Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) registration is also required for commercial drone use.

Studios operating internationally should check whether their equipment cover extends abroad. Studios renting equipment to clients should add hire and rental liability. Drone operators should ensure their PL extension explicitly covers drone-related third-party damage and aligns with CAAM registration requirements.

Common questions from studio operators

  • Is studio insurance mandatory in Malaysia?
Public liability is standard in commercial leases. Equipment cover is not mandatory but is universally recommended given the asset value. Drone operators must register with CAAM and follow CAAM rules; commercial drone PL is typically expected by corporate clients.
  • What if my equipment is stolen on location?
Equipment all risks cover handles theft on premises and in transit, subject to the policy's specified locations and security conditions. Equipment left in unattended vehicles or unsecured locations is often excluded. Read the conditions carefully.
  • Does my policy cover gear I rent for a single shoot?
Some policies include hired-in equipment cover; others require it as an extension. Worth confirming before relying on a borrowed lens for a paid shoot. Always document the rental and any conditions.
  • How much does studio insurance cost in Malaysia?
Premium depends on equipment value, claims history, whether you operate drones, whether you shoot internationally, and your client mix. Studios with high-value cinema equipment pay more than basic photo studios.
  • What about copyright disputes from a client shoot?
Professional indemnity for creative services typically covers copyright and IP-related claims. Coverage depends on your usage rights documentation and contracts. Strong contracts and music licensing records reduce exposure.
  • Are my freelance assistants covered under my policy?
Group personal accident can extend to named freelance crew, depending on the insurer. Many studios require freelance crew to carry their own PA cover for specific jobs. Document the arrangement so the right policy responds.
  • Will my home insurance cover my studio if I work from home?
Almost never for commercial photo or video work. Home insurance excludes commercial activity. You need a business-grade equipment cover even if your primary base is home.
